Recovering Out Loud:

An Evening with Laurie Dhue

"I think people in recovery confuse anonymity with secrecy, which just foments the stigma of addiction.... I believe that every time a person in recovery shares her story - her experience, strength, and hope - she helps create an environment of knowledge and understanding that's free from shame and embarrassment. It's an environment that makes it easier for more people to get help...."

Veteran news anchor, Laurie Dhue, is a New York-based
TV broadcaster and media strategist. She is the Founder & President of her own consultancy, Laurie Dhue Media. Dhue is the only anchor to have hosted shows on three primary cable news networks: CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel. Before joining
Fox News Channel, Dhue hosted several shows on MSNBC and served at CNN, where she became one of the youngest full-time anchors in the network's history. In her 24-year career, Dhue has interviewed countless international leaders as well as politicians, celebrities, and newsmakers. She has covered major news events since the early 1990s as a writer, producer, reporter, & anchor.

A person in long-term recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, Dhue has worked with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). She is also a member of Carson Treatment Center's New York Advisory Board and the board of the National Youth Recovery Foundation.

The Language of

Addiction and Recovery:

Harmful, Helpful or Both?

Workshop description

For more than two centuries addicted and recovering people

in America have been the object of language created by others. This language is ill-suited to accurately portray their experience

or to serve as a catalyst for change…

When historically stigmatized peoples create movements to

alter the conditions in which they are stigmatized, they often

begin with processes of renaming… replacing others’ labels

with words of their own choosing… William White

Where: Roads to Recovery Center
2600 Memorial Ave., Suite 107
Lynchburg, VA 24501

When: Friday, September 11, 2015 9 a.m. until noon

Who Should Attend?

Counselors, administrators, educators, advocates, community organizations, anyone interested in how to help people achieve long-term recovery in our community.

Goals for this workshop

  1. Consider the relationships between words, language, thoughts, power, stigma and people with substance
    use disorders.

  2. Reflect on the current language of addiction and
recovery and assess its strengths and areas of incongruence with the mission and values of recovery.

  3. Begin to define a new pro-recovery vocabulary.

The Joys of Recovery!

Recovery Enhancement Workshop

About the Workshop

Much of the focus of addiction treatment has been on the

disease concept and relapse prevention. Little has been done

to explore and celebrate the positive aspects of recovery.

What’s in it for a person with addiction to get sober?

What’s so great about recovery?

This workshop explores the joys of recovery and the ways to achieve them. We will look at recovery enhancement in five aspects: physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual.

Besides building a strong rationale for recovery enhancement, specific techniques are presented drawing from a variety of approaches including Positive Psychology, Mindfulness,

Solution-Oriented Therapy, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Techniques such as future-pacing, time-line therapy,

Core Transformation, self-hypnosis, deep relaxation,

guided imagery, and the sobriety miracle question are taught, giving participants tools they can use immediately with their clients and peers.

When: Friday, May 1, 2015 from 8:30 am until 1:00 p.m.

Where: Roads to Recovery
2600 Memorial Avenue, Suite 108 (training room)
